Course Design Project
ETEC 6253 - Distance Learning
Summer 2018
Executive Summary
During the Summer 2018 term, as part of the course ETEC 6253: Distance Learning, I completed a project requiring me to design an online course using the the Blackboard learning management system. The course I built was for 6th grade math students enrolled in an online program in the state of Texas. All lessons were based on Texas Essential Knowledge Skills, or TEKS.

The course included informational pieces such as an infographic syllabus, introduction to the instructor, and course introduction. Instructional pieces that were added included multiple forms of instruction, wiki glossary, student blogs, an assessment tool, and an evaluation tool. The course was designed as a full course, but for the purpose of the project, only one unit was included - multiplying and dividing integers.

When students entered the course, they were met with an announcement welcoming them to the course. The lesson designed for this course takes place in the second semester, so the welcome message and introduction activity were designed to welcome students back from the winter break. Students were informed that things were new in the course and to be sure to read the syllabus, schedule, and other informational materials.

The instruction for the lesson was delivered via EdPuzzle with guided notes. Additional resources provided included articles and web videos. Throughout the lesson, students completed various different activities to show mastery in different ways. Students contributed to a class wiki page where they built a glossary of terms relevant to the content. Students also reflected on their understandings in a blog so that they could share their knowledge with the instructor. The more traditional homework assignment was assigned through the use of a google form.
Skills Reflection
This project was very helpful for me to really think about activities that work well with online instruction. I chose the topic of multiplying and dividing integers because it is one that students struggle with in face-to-face instruction and I wanted to challenge myself to design activities that would be beneficial to students in an online environment. I had to keep in mind the level of learners that would be taking the course and prepare for the challenges they might face regarding both the content and the online system. I selected tools that would promotes understanding not only through individual lesson exploration, but also through communication and collaboration. I was also sure to design activities that allowed the students to show understanding in a multitude of ways. The development of this lesson also made me more aware of copyright laws and what is and is not allowed to be shared in an online class environment.
