CIED 695V - Independent Study
Fall 2018

Executive Summary

During the Fall of 2018, I undertook an Independent Study. The purpose of the independent study was to provide colleagues in my department with resources to enhance their use of technology in the classroom. Our district is a one-to-one district where students are provided with a Chromebook that is theirs to keep until either graduation or they leave the district. While there is a lot of support from our technology specialists, some teachers were needing additional resources to help innovate their teaching using technology.

I provided the teachers with nine resources to help them integrate technology in meaningful ways. The example here is a one page infographic that shows teachers a quick way to use the web-app PearDeck to work on vocabulary.  The students are creating digital flashcards of the unit vocabulary terms. They are practicing using the terms in sentences and also illustrating examples of the terms. The discussions that are had during the “quality control” section of the activity are rich because as a class you can discuss misconceptions as well as “aha” moments. This infographic was given to the teachers after a quick walkthrough of the process during a department PLC.

Other resources that I presented to the team included information about do’s and don’t concerning copyright and fair use laws, student data tracking, and student assessment.

Skills Reflection

This independent study was incredibly beneficial to me, especially since it came at a time when I was wrapping up my time in the Educational Technology Masters program. I was able to use the knowledge that I have gained through the program to help my fellow educators in their quest to meet the needs of their 21st century learners.
